ISDN Basic Rate Interface (BRI) Lines

I have been involved in the ISDN market since its start in the U.S. in 1986 and have followed it closely. This chart shows the number of ISDN BRI lines installed by company. Corrections have been made to rationalize the 2007 FCC ARMIS data.

ISDN BRI lines experienced dramatic growth between 1994 and 1998 due to the need for a high speed Internet connection. This need is now being met by DSL and Cable Data services and caused the rate of growth of ISDN BRI lines to slow rapidly starting in 1998 and has been dropping rapidly since 2000.

The losses in BRIs was dramatic in 2001 through 2004. It has stabilized over the last three years.
